A recent study conducted by Georgetown University concluded that over 14 million students work while still enrolled in college. Education abroad tends to be quite expensive for international students and the part time jobs can help them to meet the expenses to some extent. Many People feel that having a job while studying can be quite stressful. But the reality is quite different. One can gain a lot while working during your studies as well as after studies, it can provide quite a valuable experience. Part-time Jobs in UK

As per the Tier 4 (general) or a Tier 4 (child) visa, you can work during your studies and holidays if you meet the following requirements:

  • are studying at a publicly-funded higher education institution
  • are studying a short-term study abroad program with an overseas higher education institution
  • are over 16
  • are studying a course at NQF level 6 (degree level) and above

Part time jobs are always welcome by international students as it can meet the expense of living cost during the study time as well as provide valuable exposure of the job market.  UK government has also some provisions for the advantage of international students. However, if your passport sticker or identity card says ‘No Work’ or ‘Work Prohibited’, you should not work. It will be considered as breaching immigration conditions, which is against the law in the UK. 

Finding part-time jobs in the UK

  • Part-time jobs can be found within or outside the campus
  • On campus jobs could be working in University Administration, Cafeteria, Academic Departments, and likewise.
  • Off-campus jobs might be found in the hospitality or retail sectors.
  • For job search, students should stay in contact with the related authorities or look for online vacancies in popular websites like Careers Group London, Employment4Students, etc.

Working after you graduate

After the completion of your studies if anyone would like to stay behind and work in UK, a new visa needs to be obtained which is also understood as the Post Study Work Visa or one can also apply for a visa extension.

Options of new visa that can be obtained would be, Tier 1 Visa (Graduate Entrepreneur), Tier 2 Visa (General) and Tier 5 (Temporary Worker).
